Apple announced the Apple Watch Ultra 4 on September 9, 2026, and it has been on sale since September 18. It looks almost identical to Ultra 2, so the real question for owners is whether the upgrade is worth it.
Design and Display
The two watches are nearly identical. Both use a 49mm titanium case with 100-metre water resistance and a 3,000-nit display. Ultra 4 has a slightly larger screen area (about 5% more) thanks to a newer wide-angle display, and it is a little heavier (63.0 g vs 61.4 g).
Rumours that didn't happen: some pre-launch reports suggested a thinner case and Touch ID. Apple didn't announce either.
Performance and Battery
Ultra 4 runs on the new S11 chip, up from Ultra 2's S9. The biggest everyday gain is battery life:
- Normal use: up to 50 hours (Ultra 2: 36 hours)
- Low Power Mode: up to 84 hours
- Max Extended Workout: up to 45 hours of GPS tracking, a mode Ultra 2 doesn't have
- Fast charging: 15 minutes adds up to 18 hours
These are Apple's lab figures, so real results will vary.
Health and Smart Features
- Health Sensing System: new heart sensors that Apple says measure heart rate every five seconds.
- Readiness score: a daily 0 to 10 score based on your activity, vitals and sleep.
- 5G and satellite: Ultra 2 has LTE and no satellite support. (Both arrived with Ultra 3 in 2025.)
- Audio Intelligence: Live Rewind, Siri Recap and Sound Recognition. These are betas, English first, need a newer iPhone and aren't available on Ultra 2.
Apple's "most accurate" claims come from its own testing, so treat them as Apple's claims.
watchOS 27
Ultra 2 also gets watchOS 27, including the one-handed tap gesture and Smart Stack suggestions. Check Apple's compatibility page for Siri AI, which is a beta that starts in English.
Pricing and Availability
Ultra 4 starts at $799, the same as every Ultra before it. It went on sale September 18 in more than 50 countries. Apple's launch list doesn't specifically name Nigeria, so check local resellers for availability and Naira pricing.
Should Ultra 2 Owners Upgrade?
Yes, if you often run out of battery, want satellite safety features or care about the new health and audio tools. Probably not, if you're happy with your watch. The size, brightness and water resistance are the same, and Ultra 2 runs watchOS 27. Check your trade-in value before deciding.
Conclusion
Ultra 4 isn't a redesign. It's a focused upgrade in battery, health sensing and connectivity. For most Ultra 2 owners it's a nice-to-have, but for endurance athletes and adventurers it's a real step forward.
