Google has unveiled Gemini 4 Carbon, its latest frontier AI model, designed to deliver significant improvements in coding, complex reasoning, cybersecurity, and long-running agentic tasks.

Announced on October 28, 2026, Gemini 4 Carbon has secured the top position on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5.0, scoring 59 points. However, its initial rollout is restricted to selected cybersecurity defenders while Google continues testing its safety measures.

Gemini 4 Carbon Takes the Top Ranking

According to Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5.0, Gemini 4 Carbon currently leads the ranking with a score of 59.

The result places it ahead of several competing models, including Claude Opus 5.5 at 58 and GPT-6 Astra at 57.

The ranking measures performance across multiple AI capabilities, including reasoning, coding, knowledge work, and other demanding tasks. However, no single benchmark establishes that a model is the best choice for every application.

A Major Focus on Coding and Complex Tasks

Google says Gemini 4 Carbon is designed to handle complex engineering projects that require sustained reasoning and multiple steps.

Its capabilities include:

  • Identifying and fixing complicated software bugs.
  • Working across large codebases.
  • Handling extended coding and engineering workflows.
  • Supporting full-stack web development.
  • Performing complex scientific and technical tasks.

Google also reports improvements in its WebDev Arena performance, where Carbon reached fourth place with an Elo rating of 1,768.

Stronger Cybersecurity Capabilities

One of Gemini 4 Carbon's most significant improvements is its cybersecurity performance.

Google reports the following results:

Security benchmark Reported score
SEC-bench Pro 88.2%
ExploitGym 54.8%
CWE-bench 71.0%

These evaluations measure vulnerability discovery, exploit validation, and security patching.

The capabilities could be valuable to cybersecurity professionals working to identify software weaknesses, validate security risks, and develop fixes.

However, advanced vulnerability discovery and exploit-generation capabilities also introduce potential misuse risks. This is one reason Google is taking a controlled approach to deployment.

Why Is Access Restricted?

Unlike a typical public AI release, Gemini 4 Carbon is initially available only to a selected group of cybersecurity defenders through Google's Fairwind Program. Google plans to gradually extend access to trusted partners before making the model available to developers, businesses, and consumers through its products. The company says it is using this staged rollout to collect feedback and strengthen safeguards before wider availability.

Gemini 4 Carbon Pricing

Google has announced introductory Gemini API pricing of:

  • Input: $2 per million tokens.
  • Output: $10 per million tokens.
  • Cached input: 95% discount on the input token price.

After the introductory period, Google says standard pricing will increase to $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. The end date of Carbon's introductory pricing has not yet been announced.

These API prices are separate from any future Gemini app subscription plans, which Google has not fully confirmed for Carbon.

What This Means for Businesses and Developers

Gemini 4 Carbon demonstrates how quickly AI models are advancing beyond basic conversations and content generation. Its improvements in coding, cybersecurity, and long-running tasks could influence how businesses approach software development, security testing, automation, and technical support. For developers, the model's engineering capabilities could make complex development workflows more efficient. For cybersecurity teams, its ability to identify vulnerabilities and help develop fixes could provide another tool for defensive security operations. Businesses should nevertheless evaluate AI tools based on their actual requirements, data protection policies, reliability, and total operating costs.

Final Thoughts

Gemini 4 Carbon represents Google's latest push towards more capable AI systems, particularly in software engineering and cybersecurity. Its leading score on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5.0 is significant, but its restricted availability means most users cannot access it yet. As Google continues its staged rollout, the next important development will be seeing how the model performs in real-world business and development environments.
